Nighttime view of the west front of the United States Capitol. The cast iron dome of the United States Capitol was constructed between 1855 and 1866 late in the Capitol's architectural evolution. The United States Capitol is a fine example of 19th century neoclassical architecture, begun in 1793 has been built, burnt, rebuilt and restored. The capitol was orginally designed by William Thornton and modified by Benjamin Latrobe and then Charles Bulfinch. The current dome and House and Senate Chambers were designed by Thomas U. Walter and August Schoenborn. |
