William Manning Photography Workshops

Photography workshops should be fun, educational and a chance to unwind from our hectic daily routines. It is my goal to help participants open new approaches to their photography, rather it be creatively or simply helping them simplify their workflow from capture to finished art. Every student will be challenged in the field from the way they see, think and approach their subjects.

Each photography workshop is designed around a theme or major focus. Although we may have a particular area we'll focus on, this doesn't stop us from expanding beyond. After teaching workshops for over 18 years and shooting stock photography and assignment work I have a lot of experience, knowledge and resources to pull from to give each participant a rewarding workshop that will carry with them well beyond the few days we spend together.

I strongly believe the best photographs are created in the camera not the computer, that being said I know Photoshop well along with many of today's other popular software programs used by the creative industry. We have to think of these programs as tools that help us achieve our creative goals, not as programs that help us cover our mistakes.

Each workshop may vary as to our subject or topic, but every workshop will be filled with information that will better each student as an artist. All the information we discuss from shooting techniques to learning popular software programs will open doors to new and creative ways of thinking as an artist.

Challenge yourself creatively and join me on a workshop. It will be rewarding.

Thanks

William

2010 Workshops

September 22-26
Beautiful Pacific Coastline, Oregon - Theme: Thinking Creatively in the Field and Basic Workflow
Cost: $895.

The beautiful Oregon Coast will be our studio for this workshop. This diverse region offers a variety of subjects from golden sand dunes, colorful tide pools, stunning landscapes to peaceful sunsets. We'll base our workshop out of Coos Bay, Oregon and focus out photography on the southern part of the coast. Of my many visits photographing this part of the country, I have always been rewarded with breathtaking images. I will focus this workshop on Thinking Creatively in the Field. Participants will be put in situations that will force them to look beyond the obvious. It is so easy to get caught up in shooting the one or two scenes or subjects that every photographer is drawn too. Sure, you'll have the opportunity to shoot these but I'll have participants exploring and photographing beyond their comfort zone which hopefully will open doors doors to creativity. We'll also discuss some available software programs that open up new opportunities in the field and allow you to embark upon new ways of thinking in the field. Good photography doesn't all come from luck. Much of it comes from having an open mind, being alert and knowing what is available to you in post processing. Our classroom will be both behind the camera and behind the computer. Computer time will take place during the lesser productive hours in the field. 80% field time and 20% classroom instruction.

Autumn in the White Mountains of NH - Theme: Thinking Creatively in the Field and Basic Workflow
Cost: $895.

The White Mountains of New Hampshire come alive with the warm hues of the autumn season. The mountains and streams are dressed in the season best with a variety of color and changing weather conditions. Eastern forests are always a challenge to photograph but the autumn so often brings out the best in the photographer's creative vision. The location of our workshop puts us in the heart of the White Mountains and several other locations that will test the creative process of even the seasoned photographer. I will focus this workshop on Thinking Creatively in the Field. Participants will be put in situations that will force them to look beyond the obvious. It is so easy to get caught up in shooting the one or two scenes or subjects that every photographer is drawn too. White Mountains of New Hampshire Workshop

October 13-17
The Art of Photographing Architecture, Cincinnati, Ohio - Learn the Techniques of Successfully Photographing Architecture
Cost : $895.

Architecture can be one of the great challenges in photography when doing it right is important. Photographers will learn why white balance is important and how to get it correct in the field, how to handle multiple light sources, what to look for in the view finder, how to set up an interior space and how to shoot for HDR (high dynamic range) photography. Photographers will have the opportunity to photograph in some challenging interior spaces as well as many different exterior situations from intimate scenes to cityscapes. Our classroom discussions will give participants the opportunity to learn computer techniques that allow for a realistic looking finished product. HDR is a fact of most interior shooting situations and many photographers struggle to achieve that real photo look, most end with an image with a illustrative look. Participants will learn how to get both a realistic look and an illustrative look based on your desire not by chance.

Our workshop will be lead by both William Manning and Adam Jones in beautiful Cincinnati, Ohio. Cincinnati is a wonderful city to shoot because it has an incredible mix of both historic and contemporary architecture, an abundance of incredible skyline views and some great streets with easy access away from heavy crowds. Cincinnati lies in the heart of the Ohio Valley with the Ohio river dividing the state line of Ohio and Kentucky. It is one of only a few major cities in the United States that offers a hilly terrain where the photographer has many vantage points throughout the outer boundaries of the city. This workshop is designed for the photographer interested in learning how to capture stunning architectural subjects. What you learn from this workshop will apply to many other situations beyond the architectural subject.

October 27 - 31
Stock Photography Workshop, New York, NY - Learn the business of Stock Photography.
Cost: $895.

This is a don't miss workshop for photographers interested in learning the business of stock photography. The stock photography industry is changing and those that find success are those that understand the industry and can create the right images that consistently sell. This special workshop will give photographers an in-depth look into the stock photography business. Our workshop takes place in New York City, home of Corbis Images. Participants will get a rare opportunity to visit the offices of Corbis, one of the largest players in the stock photography business, and discuss the industry with long time photo editor Joyce Faust. Joyce will discuss topics that give participants a better understanding of how the industry works and the opportunity to ask questions. For many years Joyce has edited the work of some of the worlds best and most successful photographers, she will follow up on Saturday with a personal critique (one on one) of each photographer giving feedback on their portfolio. Your critique will allow you to hear and learn from a professional editor who has guided many photographers throughout their professional careers. Participants will be given shooting assignments and take to the busy streets of New York to demonstrate what they have learned in our group discussions. These assignments are based on subjects that are regularly requested stock images. William Manning will lead the hands on shoot throughout the city and talk throughout the week about the industry, from starting your business to doing it right and most importantly making money. Another special guest, Adam Jones, will join us for a day of shooting on the streets and he will share his insight of the stock photo industry.

This workshop will fill quickly. If you want a challenging photo shoot in one of the world's great cities, want to learn stock photography and want feedback from a professional editor on your work and where it stands in the marketplace, then this is the workshop for you. I hope you will join us. Our workshop coincides with Photo Expo at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, this is the largest photo show in the eastern United States. There will be time during the workshop to visit the Expo for those interested.

Winter in the Canadian Rockies - Theme: Field Techniques and Work Flow
Cost: $895.

There is no other place in North America where one can have such easy access to such beautiful winter scenery as that of the Canadian Rockies. Yes, it is cold but the beauty will warm you with the excitement of having the grand opportunity to capture images few other will have. I will focus this workshop on Field Techniques and workflow. The days are short therefore there is plenty of time to come back from each days shoot and discuss and work the images we captured in the field. I will spend time each day discussing work flow and easy to follow step by step instruction on how to fine tune your images. Much of it comes from having an open mind, being alert and knowing what and how to use your equipment. I hope you can join me in the Canadian Rockies as I'm sure you will be well rewarded for your efforts on this incredible journey.

If you enjoy skiing, you may want to plan on arriving early or staying after the workshop to take in some great skiing conditions.
